GLOSSARY

VACUUM:

The cleaning process for a swimming pool that includes sucking leaves, algae, and other debris from the pool floor. This done by creating a low pressure

condition in the suction line.

VALVES:

Restricts or obstructs water flow for adjusting hydraulics. Can also be used to only allow water flow in one direction, like a check valve. This device is placed in the plumbing line.

VERMICULITE:

This is a special mineral that expands greatly when heat is applied to it. This is an effect that is commonly produced in commercial furnaces.

VENTURI:

A method of increasing water velocity in a spa by restricting pipe size.

VOLUTE:

The volute of a pump is the casing that receives fluid being pumped by the impeller which slows down the fluids rate of flow. It is a curved funnel that increases in area as it reaches the discharge port. It is most commonly used with impeller pumps for swimming pools. As the cross-section area gets bigger, the volute reduces the speed and increases the pressure of the liquid. Balancing the hydraulic pressure of the shafts pump is one of the main purposes of a volute. This occurs best at the manufacturers recommended capacity. If you run a volute-style pump at a lower capacity than the manufacturer recommends it can put lateral stress on the shaft of the pump, which increases wear-and-tear on the seals and bears, in addition to the shaft itself.

VISION SYSTEM:

This technology's purpose is to isolate nascent oxygen into a strong sanitizing mechanism. See Cationic Sanitation.

VINYL LINER:

One type of interior pool finish. The liner is placed over a sand or cement floor, and locked into the top of the pools wall, by a method such a bead receiver. Vinyl liners are extremely popular and come in a variety of different thickness and designs.
